Brief Description:
Human interaction with and management of the difficult landscape of Petra is a testament to the ability of ancient civilizations to cope with water-related challenges. Poor data and the lack of modern heavy equipment or modeling tools were not an obstacle to effective flood control and water management. In this lecture, Professor Nizar Abu Jaber will present an overview of the climate, geology and landscape of Petra, the Nabateans and their footprint on the region as well their flood and water control systems. This will be followed by a discussion about German Jordanian University (GJU)’s projects that are aimed to better understand the hydrology of the area, mimic the flood control technology and explore how the lessons learnt can be used in modern contexts.
