The Embassy of Jordan in Japan held on Friday April 8th a webinar titled “Holy Jordan” presented by Engineer Rustom Mkhjian, Director General of the Baptism Site Commission.
In this webinar, Mr. Mkhjian walked the attendees into Jordan’s rich biblical heritage through the Bible and the footsteps of early Christian pilgrims. He also highlighted the integral importance of Jordan as part of the Holy Land. He added that to perform an authentic pilgrimage, worshippers must include the biblical sites in Jordan.
Mr. Mkhjian explained how Christianity was proclaimed at Bethany Beyond the Jordan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Baptism site, located east of the river Jordan opposite Jericho in The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. It is also the place where John the Baptist started his ministry and baptized Jesus Christ, and from where Jesus Christ began his public ministry accompanying the two brothers Andrew and Simon whom He called Peter.
Pilgrims to Jordan do not only experience the sanctity of the land of Jordan, they also witness one of the most revered examples of interfaith harmony and peaceful living. Moslems and Christians in Jordan have lived side by side for over 1300 years in Jordan forming a beautiful mosaic of peace and harmony.
The audience at the 60-minute online event was welcomed by Ambassador Lina Annab and Deputy Chief Mission Rasheed Arekat. The webinar was attended by representatives of Jesuit academic institutions in Japan, pilgrimage tour organisers, and other representatives of various Japanese governmental organization.
This webinar is part of a series of activities carried out by the Embassy of Jordan in Japan to promote Christian pilgrimages to Jordan as an integral part of the Holy Land, and to build bridges of friendship and scholarly relations between the Christian communities in Jordan and Japan (estimated at 2 million).

“الأردن…الأرض المقدسة”
أقامت السفارة الأردنية في اليابان يوم الجمعة الموافق 8 نيسان 2022، ندوة عبر الإنترنت بعنوان “الأردن: الأرض المقدسة” قدمها المهندس رستم مكجيان، مدير عام هيئة موقع المغطس.
بداية قام السيد مكجيان بعرض التراث المسيحي الغني للأردن أمام الحضور عبر استعراض مقتطفات من الكتاب المقدس وخطى الحجاج المسيحيين الأوائل، كما سلط الضوء على أهمية الأردن كجزء أساسي من الأراضي المقدسة، مشيراً إلى أنه ومن أجل أداء مكتمل لفريضة الحج المسيحي، لا بد من يجب أن يشمل الحجّاج خلال أدائهم فريضتهم المواقع المسيحية المتعددة في الأردن.
كما شرح السيد مكجيان كيفية ظهور ونشأة المسيحية في موقع المغطس (المعمودية)، وهو أحد مواقع التراث العالمي لليونسكو، ويقع شرق نهر الأردن في المملكة الأردنية الهاشمية، مقابل مدينة أريحا على الجانب الفلسطيني. وأوضح بأنه المكان الذي بدأ فيه يوحنا المعمدان دعوته وعمّد فيه يسوع المسيح، وحيث بدأ يسوع المسيح دعوته أيضاً برفقة الأخوين أندراوس وسمعان.
أوضح السيد مكجيان كذلك أن الحجاج إلى الأردن، لن يشعروا بقداسة أرضه وحسب، بل سيشهدون أيضًا على أحد أفضل الأمثلة للوئام بين الأديان والعيش السلمي، حيث عاش المسلمون والمسيحيون في الأردن جنبًا إلى جنب منذ قرابة 1300 عام في بيئة من السلام والوئام
أفتتح اللقاء السفيرة لينا عناب ونائب رئيس البعثة رشيد عريقات بالترحيب بالحضور في هذه الندوة التي استمرت لـ 60 دقيقة عبر الإنترنت، وحضرها ممثلو المؤسسات الأكاديمية اليسوعية في اليابان ومنظمي رحلات الحج المسيحي وممثلين آخرين عن مختلف المنظمات الحكومية اليابانية
وتعد هذه الندوة جزءاً من سلسلة من الأنشطة التي تنفذها السفارة الأردنية في اليابان، للترويج للحج المسيحي إلى الأردن كجزء من الأرض المقدسة، وسعياً منها لبناء جسور الصداقة والعلاقات الأكاديمية والثقافية بين المجتمعات والمنظمات المسيحية في الأردن واليابان (التي تضم 2 مليون ياباني مسيحي).
